Howard Hughes Medical Institute

UX/UI, digital identity, and brand photography

At Teal we collaborated with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the largest private biomedical research institution in the United States, to revamp their online presence. Our joint effort resulted in a redesigned website aligned with HHMI's new strategic priorities, portraying them as a pioneering force in research and education. The updated platform seamlessly integrates the current brand, offering a visually inspiring and forward-thinking experience while ensuring information accessibility and user-friendliness.

ELEVATING NEW STRATEGIC PRIORITIES

HHMI partnered with Teal to streamline their website’s content strategy, ensuring a clearer depiction of their identity and offerings. This involved a thorough analysis to determine what needed to be rewritten, elevated, or archived. We crafted content templates and meticulously revised program content to enhance accessibility. Together we delivered best practices and guidance to assist HHMI in leveraging their brand differentiators. Elevating HHMI’s approach, programs, and fellows distinguished HHMI as a unique institution. Numerous technical and structural upgrades were implemented to ensure that content across the website is easily searchable, indexable, and interconnected.

To help HHMI better tell these stories, We HHMI a flexible, scalable design system. Our design system is composed of a library of components that lets the HHMI team create compelling narratives with both short- and long-form content. We also included media-rich components to make sure they are elevating the scientific innovation that makes this organization so unique.

OPTIMIZING THE STORYTELLING EXPERIENCE

Teal also curated a robust library of on-brand photography culled from HHMI’s thousands of images over the course of their 70 year history. By emphasizing images of  real scientists immersed in the work, we centered DEI in the curation process. This was critical for HHMI because they prioritize breaking down barriers within the scientific field, and authentic DEI is a long-held value for the organization.
